Health & safety

As metrics within the people pillar, Mercuria tracks injuries across its own employees, assets where it has operational oversight, and for any contractors similarly working on our behalf.  Intertwined with this and as part of choosing our business partners and service providers, we include within our Know-Your-Counterparty process enquiry into their having HSE standards and commitments that are aligned with our own.  While our reporting includes individuals from those partners and service providers that are working for us as contractors, we do not otherwise look to report upon incidents concerning any business our partners’ may have apart from and unrelated to Mercuria’s operations, or events concerning individuals that are not providing services to or acting as a part of the operations within Mercuria’s operational control or oversight.

For clarity in relation to our tracking of injuries, Mercuria’s first interest is solely toward ensuring that individuals will be provided with appropriate medical attention to assess the extent of any injury and to ensure appropriate treatment is provided.  With preference for assessment and appropriate treatment, we do not include in our metrics those cases where medical professionals did not conclude an injury exists or an injury was found to only require first aid.  While wanting to avoid events resulting in injuries, we will never dissuade individuals from seeking medical attention to help ensure their well-being.  We will investigate instances where an injury occurred, or significant near-misses where circumstances almost resulted in injuries.  We encourage and expect the involved individuals to assist in those investigations to help our understanding of the factors contributing to the event, and work to ensure that persons suffering injuries are not subject to any negative or punitive impact where their actions were not willfully contrary to policies, procedures or training.

During the 2023 calendar year while the substantial majority of our operations were conducted with no mishaps, we did have 8 instances where individuals experienced injuries where formal medical attention was required, but where the individual fully recovered / healed with no lasting impact.  There were no work-related instances reported during 2023 where Mercuria’s employees or contractors working on our behalf suffered more serious injuries resulting in permanent disabilities or death.

* Exclusive of motor vehicle crashes where initial medical attention is offered or given to all parties involved.

** Concerning Mercuria’s employees / contractors.

As Mercuria continues to grow and expand its businesses, we are also mindful of the inherent risks tied to all our physical activities Accordingly we will continue our endeavors to reinforce training and further improve our operations with the aim of mitigating or minimizing against circumstances that have potential to result in injuries.

Well-being

We are pleased to report on a number of corporate initiatives at Mercuria that demonstrate our commitment to our employees’ well-being. We take pride in our efforts to foster a positive work culture that supports our employees’ well-being, growth, and development and have introduced several programs over the years to improve our employees’ health, safety, and well-being.

Around the world, we make programs available to employees include gym classes, fitness activities, and wellness workshops designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent illnesses.

In North America, these efforts have been recognized by Cigna, a global health services company. In 2023 we were awarded their Silver healthy workforce designation for our commitment to supporting our employees’  health and well-being. The Cigna Healthy Workforce Designation evaluates organizations based on the core components of their well-being program, including leadership and culture, program foundations, program execution, and whole person health.

MM Marine photo competition

At Mercuria we are proud of our seafarers and the extraordinary work they do, spending long periods of time on our vessels. Last year, we held our 2nd annual photography competition for our seafarers across MM Marine to give a glimpse of the lives they lead at sea. The initiative was a huge success and we were overwhelmed with the response – nearly 1000 entries across the 5 categories Life At Sea, Nature & Wildlife, Our Beautiful Oceans, The Environment We Live In, and Vessel Bunkering Operations.
