Health & safety

Mercuria monitors health and safety metrics within the people-focused pillar, covering its own employees, assets under its operational oversight, and contractors working on its behalf.  As part of selecting business partners and service providers, Mercuria incorporates an evaluation of their health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards and commitments through its Know-Your-Counterparty process, ensuring alignment with its own values.  While the company’s reporting includes incidents involving contractors from those partners and service providers working for Mercuria, it does not account for incidents related to the partners’ independent business activities or individuals not involved in operations under Mercuria’s control or oversight.

In the event of an accident, Mercuria’s foremost priority is ensuring that all individuals involved receive proper medical care to assess the severity of any injury and are provided with treatment, if necessary.  We require that event reporting be factual and unbiased to support effective monitoring and governance of our operations.  Cases where medical professionals conclude that no injury occurred, or that treatment was limited to first aid, are excluded from our incident metrics.

Mercuria investigates all confirmed injuries, incidents involving damage or loss, and significant near-miss events—those in which conditions nearly resulted in harm.  During these investigations, we encourage and expect the cooperation of all parties involved to help us in assessing the circumstances contributing to the event.

Mercuria is committed to protecting individuals who report concerns under our Whistleblowing Policy or share information about incidents or near-misses from negative or punitive consequences, provided their actions were not willfully contrary to established policies, procedures, or training.  Mercuria also ensures that all employees and contractors are aware of the company’s Stop-Work Policy, which provides the authority for anyone to halt work activities if they identify unsafe conditions or activities posing apparent health, safety, or environmental risks.  Work is required to be suspended until management conducts a thorough assessment.  This policy underscores Mercuria’s prioritization of safety over productivity goals or deadlines and assures that safety concerns can be raised by anyone, regardless of their role, without fear of retaliation or adverse consequences.  These same policies are also applied across all Mercuria-related assets.

During the 2024 calendar year while nearly all operations were conducted with no incidents, there were 3 instances where individuals experienced injuries where formal medical attention was required, but where the individual fully recovered / healed with no lasting impact.  Beyond these, there were 3 incidents that were permanent, or were life altering or fatalities.

* Exclusive of motor vehicle crashes where initial medical attention is offered or given to all parties involved.

** Concerning Mercuria’s employees / contractors.

As Mercuria continues to grow and expand its businesses, we are also mindful of the inherent risks tied to all our physical activities.  Accordingly, we will continue our endeavors to provide and reinforce training and further improve our operations with the aim of mitigating or minimizing against circumstances that have potential to result in injuries.

Well-being

We are pleased to report on a number of corporate initiatives at Mercuria that demonstrate our commitment to our employees’ well-being. We take pride in our efforts to foster a positive work culture that supports our employees’ well-being, growth, and development and have introduced several programs over the years to improve our employees’ health, safety, and well-being.

Around the world, we make programs available to employees include gym classes, fitness activities, and wellness workshops designed to promote a healthy lifestyle and prevent illnesses.

In North America, these efforts have been recognized by Cigna, a global health services company. In 2024 we were awarded their Gold healthy workforce designation for our commitment to supporting our employees’  health and well-being.

The Cigna Healthy Workforce Designation evaluates organizations based on the core components of their well-being program, including leadership and culture, program foundations, program execution, and whole person health.

MM Marine photo competition

At Mercuria we are proud of our seafarers and the extraordinary work they do, spending long periods of time on our vessels. Towards the end of 2024, we held our 3rd annual photography competition for our seafarers across MM Marine to give a glimpse of the lives they lead at sea. We have been overwhelmed with both the quantity and quality of the submissions. We are currently judging the entries and will announce and showcase the winners in due course.

Community Involvement and Social Responsibility

Our engagement with career fairs, disaster relief efforts, and charity partnerships showcases Mercuria’s commitment to making a positive impact. The ongoing support we have provided and the voluntary participation of our staff underlines our dedication to community welfare.
